ICML Rhino

International Cars and Motors Ltd[ICML] is now making news and occupies top pages in magazines for its Rhino SUV to Joint venture with Chinese company Chery for the small car. After Tata and Mahindra this Himachal based company ICML is making india proud. ICML is formed by the tractor manufacturer Sonalika and has a JV with UK based MG rover (Tata earlier marketed its indica In Europe through MG Rover). ICML has rolled out its first product - Rhino MUV(Multi Utility Vehicle) last year, the Rhino resembles India’s popular MUV Toyota Qualis in most sense and competes with Mahindra Scorpio, Tata Safari, Chevrolet Tavera and Toyota Innova. Though the Rhino is not available throughout the country (since the current Rhino meets only BS II norms), ICML has planned to sell 2000 Rhino’s in a month i.e., 24000 Rhino’s in a year. ICML will launch a refurbished rhino called Rhino RX soon . Rhino RX comes in three variant s1,s2 and Dlx.

Engine and Powertrain:

Current Rhino is powered by an Isuzu 2.0-litre Turbocharged inter-cooled diesel engine(same engine which powers the ambassador) sourced from Hindustan motors which develops 75PS at 4200rpm and a maximum torque of 155Nm at 2500rpm (turbo kicks in at 2000rpm). Now ICML powers the new Rhino RX with a much powerful engine. Unlike the existing Rhino this time Rhino gets its engine from Rover’s Galileo series G1 engine which features a rotary oil pump. This new G1 engine is developed in association with Lotus engineering and develops 101PS at 4200rpm and generates 220Nm of torque at 2400rpm. This engine is Euro III complyable which could help ICML to export the new Rhino. 5 speed manual is offered to derive power from this engine. Soon Rhino will embrace the CRDi technology through a Euro IV compliant 2L,130bhp engine Galileo G2 engine.

Performance and Fuel Efficiency (manufacturer’s claim):

According to ICML, Rhino RX can reach 100kph from standstill in just 14 seconds and can reach a top speed of 160kph. Rhino delivers 17kpl making for a 850km range with 50L tank.

Design and Engineering:

The boon and bane of the Rhino lies in its close resemblance to qualis. Rhino’s styling may be out of date but the boxy structure still lures many customers. Rhino is not a show stopper but very utilitarian from almost flat windscreen to boxy passenger cabin. ICML has sorted some of the teething problems associated with the current Rhino i.e. Poor plastics and body panel alignment/gaps. In the front, Golden ICML logo on the simple chrome grille looks nice along with clear lens wraparound headlamps and ORVM (Outside Rear View Mirrors) integrated indicators. The front bumper which houses the fog lamps and air dams which would have lend muscular image is spoiled due to slim wheel arches and not so oversized wheels which are very necessary for MUVs. Rhino RX. Rhino’s hood has given a slant to aid aerodynamics. Two tone treatment, colour coded door handles and wide side steps is a treat for pedestrians view.Top hinged door with a larger tail gate and stepped up bumpers at rear ensures practicality.

Inside the Rhino Rx it looks more upmarket with bright and airy cabin. Instrument panel houses tacho, speedo, fuel gauges and telltales.Silver centre console houses oval air conditioned louvers. USP of the Rhino could be its strong air conditioning which are tested in 50+ temperatures to sub zero chill in Himachal. This strong air con is dispersed all over the cabin through appropriate vent and high end variant of Rhino RX offers twin air con with controls for third row passengers. Split/slide side windows at the rear ensures good visibility for rear passengers too. Leg room is generous for all passengers and the middle row splits to accommodate the last row passengers.

On the road:

Hydraulic power steering which gets lighter on the move along with the 5.6m turning radius eases the Rhino RX to drive in city conditions. 205/65 Bridgestone tyres grips the tall profiled rhino well. Braking department is taken care by ventilated discs at the front and drums at the rear. The ladder framed Rhino RX features independent suspension at the front and semi elliptical leaf springs at the rear..

Safety and Special features:

No ESP or traction control though it is very imminent for Tall profile MUVs we cannot expect for this price. This 8/9 seater has collapsible steering column and dual impact side beam for the safety of its occupants.Power windows, heater, fog lamps, rear defogger, roof rail, high mounted stop lamp, Internally adjustable RVM, remote fuel lid opener, leather wrapped steering wheel and single DIN CD player are the long list of special features which makes Rhino RX DLX a superb package.

Service and Price:

Currently Rhino is available in northwest of India barring Delhi but with EURO III compliant engine and more upmarket look it will be launched soon throughout the country. ICML offers 6 free services and warranty for 50000km or 1yr. The existing Rhino is priced in the range of Rs5.45 – 6.85lakhs. For the much powerful Rhino RX the prices are expected to be higher.

Bajaj Bikes

BAJAJ DISCOVER 150cc

Discover will soon co-exist with the larger pulsar family through the 150cc Discover. Bajaj’s constant upgradation has ketp the pulsar afresh but as competetion intenses, it time for an all new bike from the successful 150cc maker. Performance will be the main theme for the Discover’s 150cc variant. Bikes of Discover family has been successful for Bajaj Auto. Last year, bajaj introduced the 135cc discover and that lured the customers who loved the mileage of 125cc and performance of 150cc bike. Discover 150cc will host LED tail lamps, Nitrox suspension and digital instrumentation similar to other permium bikes from Bajaj. Bajaj hopes to upgrade the 125cc customers with the new Discover 150cc. Watch this space for more details on bajaj discover 150cc.

BAJAJ XCD SPRINT 125cc

Bajaj which tasted the success with the XCD will come out with a new variant of the same in 2008. To be named as XCD sprint 125cc will cater to the needs of 125cc customer. Unlike the current XCD, the new XCD sprint will host Nitrox suspension and disc brake which means superior comfort and improved safety. XCD sprint will also feature larger alloy wheels to improve the style.Apart from XCD sprint, Bajaj Auto today announced that it will launch 150cc Discover and blade 125cc DTSi in 2008.

BAJAJ BLADE 125cc

Bajaj which showcased the blade scooter in 2006 Auto Expo will launch the scooter in 2008. Though the motorcycles sales continues to dip, scooter sales soars. In 2007, it posted double digit growth. Bajaj once a dominant player in the scooter market confined to concentrate only on motorcycles. kristal the only scooter from Bajaj Auto fails to inspire customers unlike activa and scooty pep. In the mean while Suzuki Access and Kinetic sym flyte made a new segment (125cc) in 2007 Both access and flyte are received well by the customers and posting good numbers every month. Bajaj will debut in this 125cc segment with the new ‘Blade 125cc’ (yes, it will not feature 160cc engine as showcased in 2006 Auto expo) The new blade 125cc DTSi will target not just the girls but the working men. Disc brakes, Telescopic front fork and superior suspension settings will set a new benchmark for other scooters. Bike owners may take back their words, Blade is not just for commuting it will be peppy and compete even with the motorcycles. The 125cc engine will feature proven DTSi technology and the presence of four valves will help in efficient charging/discharging and hence we can expect improved fuel efficiency figure from blade 125cc DTSi. Watch this space to know more about Bajaj’s Blade 125cc DTSi

Acer Aspire One Netbook

This is a welcome move, and the Aspire One looks sleek and slim. Its lid has a mirrored finish, with a range of available colors: dark blue, green, red, black, and white. The same mirrored finish extends to the bezel of the LCD panel, but the keyboard area gets a flat matte finish in a color similar to that of the lid.

The hinges are fairly thick and though they are colored oddly, are pretty solidly made. The body of the Aspire One is quite sturdy, with no audible squeaks anywhere. The material used in its construction is pretty lightweight and this shows in the overall weight, which is just 1.26 kg for the 120GB HDD model. If you choose to opt for the SSD model, the weight drops to a mere 0.98 kg. Its overall size of 245 x 165 x 25 mm makes it among the smallest in the netbook segment.

The keyboard is very functional. Not only is it decently sized, it offers good spacing between keys, and adequate tactile feedback. This is a welcome move, as in laptops this small, keyboards tend to get too cramped and make typing a miserable experience. But on the Aspire one, I was able to comfortably type for a few hours without suffering from keyboard fatigue.

In comparison, however, the touchpad of the Aspire one suffers quite badly. Not only is it really tiny, it's mouse buttons are not very responsive. While it’s certainly not unusable, it's troublesome enough to get a negative mark against the Aspire One.

The LCD panel is easily the best I have seen in any netbook till now. It’s an 8.9 inch backlit LED panel with a native resolution of 1024 x 600 and offers a very good experience. Its color, contrast and blackness levels are top-notch and give a vivid viewing experience usually found in much more expensive laptops. Surprisingly, it even had decent side viewing angles.

Connectivity-wise, the Aspire One is similar to other netbooks. It has three USB ports, a 0.3 MP camera, a multi-format card reader, VGA out and the standard audio plugs for speakers/headphones.

The performance evaluation of netbooks is a bit different from the usual battery of tests we normally deploy. Netbooks have been designed strictly for everyday work, internet usage and other mundane activities. They fall more in the 'content consumption' than 'content creation' category. So we have stayed away from normal synthetic benchmarks, choosing to focus on ease of use, battery life, software support, and multitasking capability.

The Aspire One, like all other netbooks currently available, is available in two formats. One is a fully loaded affair with Windows XP, and the other comes with slightly reduced stats and sports Linux. Our test piece was the Windows XP model, offering 1GB of RAM, an N270 processor clocked at 1.6 GHz, 120GB of HDD storage, and an 8.9 inch LED backlit panel.

In the usage test, the Acer passed with just a bit of a struggle. Though its touchpad was annoying at times, its excellent keyboard and well-made screen made working on it while travelling a pleasant experience: at no time was I tempted to stop my internet surfing or writing this article.

The battery life was pretty okay. It lasts around 1½ hours on a 3-cell battery, and roughly 4½ hours on a 6-cell battery. These are decent figures, and can be easily extended with judicious use. These figures were arrived after checking out two different settings. In the first I simply turned the brightness up full, ran music/video tests, used Wi-Fi intensively, and generally putting it under full load. The second test was a bit more sedate; I simply stuck to internet surfing over Wi-Fi and typing this article.

When it came to software, the Aspire One had no issues. Since it was loaded with Windows XP, it had access to every possible application under the sun! And I was not surprised to find that it excelled in the multitasking department. The Atom processor may not be designed for HD decoding, but it's fast enough to multitask smoothly without any kind of slowdown. I was able to simultaneously listen to music, surf with multiple Firefox windows, type this article, and do other activities without issues.

The only thing that greatly annoyed me was the lack of integrated Bluetooth. This is a technology that we have come to take for granted, and there was no reason for Acer not to include it. Considering how good this netbook is overall, it may have been prudent for them to put it in. In fact, modders have already figured out a way to introduce BT into the netbook, as can be seen here.

The Aspire One is a well-made machine. It retails for Rs 19,999 (Linux) and Rs 21,999 (Window XP). At its price point it’s easily one of the best choices available right now in the sub-10 inch netbook space. I can recommend it without any reservations.
